Tsu-Wei Chou Elected TMS Fellow

Tsu-Wei Chou, Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering at the University of Delaware, has been elected a Fellow of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) for his influential contributions to the mechanics of nanocomposites and anisotropic heterogeneous materials." (read more)

Chou Teams with Korean Researchers in Global Research Lab Program

Researchers from the Korea Institute of Materials (KIMS) and the University of Delaware have been selected to receive a $5-million grant from the Korea Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) for work in the area of nanotechnology. Tsu-Wei Chou, Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, and Erik Thostenson, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, will lead the UD effort in the nine-year program.

MOST provides central direction, planning, coordination, and evaluation of all science and technology activities in Korea. The funding comes through the Global Research Laboratory (GRL) program, which is aimed at developing fundamental and original technologies through international collaborative research between Korean and foreign laboratories. Thostenson and Chou Use Carbon Nanotubes to Detect Defects in Composites

Erik Thostenson and Tsu-Wei Chou have been investigating means to detect and identify damage within advanced composite materials by using a network of tiny carbon nanotubes, which act in much the same manner as human nerves. (read more)

Professor Chou Named AIAA Fellow

Tsu-Wei Chou, Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The grade of fellow is conferred on individuals who have made “notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics." (read more)

Jerzy L. Nowinski Lecture

Tsu-Wei Chou, the Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, delivered UD's annual Jerzy L. Nowinski Lecture on May 5, 2005. The lectureship, which began in 1975, honors Jerzy L. Nowinski, professor emeritus in mechanical engineering, for his contributions to the field of applied mechanics. (read more)

Professor Chou Heads Interdisciplinary Carbon Nanotube Research Project

A team of researchers led by Tsu-Wei Chou, P.S. du Pont Chair of Engineering at UD, recently was awarded a major grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for research on carbon nanotubes. The funding from the Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team (NIRT) will support the researchers’ efforts to synthesize, characterize and model aligned nanotube arrays for nanoscale devices and composites. P.S. du Pont Chair of Engineering

UD President David P. Roselle announced that Tsu-Wei Chou, chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, will be the first to hold the P.S. du Pont Chair of Engineering. Funded by the Unidel Foundation, the endowed chair honors the memory of industrialist and philanthropist Pierre Samuel du Pont. (read more).

Chou Honored for Contributions to the Engineering Literature

Tsu-Wei Chou, P.S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, and chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was named a "Highly Cited Researcher" in the field of materials science by the Institute of Scientific Information   Chou was also selected for the Worcester-Reed Warner Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), awarded during the 2002 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition.  The medal is given to individuals who add to the permanent literature of engineering. Chou, who is chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the literature in analytical modeling, processing science and damage mechanics of fiber composite materials (read more).
