Admission Procedures

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Delaware attracts outstanding engineering and science students from throughout the world. While most of our graduate students have undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, exceptional students with backgrounds in other disciplines may also be admitted.

The application process for admission to the University of Delaware is administered through the Office of Graduate Studies. The application fee is $60 and you may use your credit card to pay this fee if you send the application via the on-line application at http://www.udel.edu/gradoffice/applicants/. The full application process will require you submitting the following application materials to the Graduate Office, University of Delaware , Newark , DE 19716 . (Material may be submitted at any time; it is not necessary to wait until all material is complete.):

1. Completed on-line application.

2. Undergraduate (and where applicable, graduate) transcripts. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is expected.

3. GRE exams (general) are required for all applicants. A minimum score of 1200 (verbal plus quantitative) is expected, although most of our applicants exceed this minimum.

4. The following scores in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for students whom English is not a first language:

  • Paper based test - a cumulative score of at least 600
  • Computer based test - requires 250 to be a TA and 213 to be admitted
  • IBet - requires 79 to be admitted and 100 to be a TA

This test is not required of students who have received an undergraduate or post-graduate degree from a College or University in which English is the sole language of instruction.

5. A minimum of three letters of recommendation from former teachers or superivsors. If the letters are not completed on-line, they should be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies, University of Delaware, 234 Hullihen Hall, Newark , DE 19716 .
