Financial Support for Graduate Study

Graduate students in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware generally receive financial support to cover tuition and expenses. This support takes one of the three forms: Research Assistantship, Teaching Assistantship, and Fellowship. All types of financial assistance presently provide a stipend of about $1,690 per month plus tuition expenses.
Funds for Research Assistantships (RA) are provided by research grants obtained by individual faculty members. Students holding Research Assistantships contribute to the research that provides their support.
Teaching assistantship (TA) are provided from Department funds. Students holding Teaching Assistantships are expected to work a maximum of twenty hour per week assisting a faculty member with undergraduate teaching. Depending on the specific course, teaching assistants may grade homework, hold office hours, and help with laboratory or problem sessions. Excellent English language skills are required to be a teaching assistant.
There are a limited number of Fellowships which are generally awarded to outstanding students on a competitive basis. These provide support without a specific teaching or research commitment.
Awards of financial assistance are made on the basis of merit and students who submit completed applications by January 15 are given preference. If you request financial assistance in your application, you will not be informed of an award until after you have been accepted into the graduate program.
