Why Engineering?

Engineering is one of the most interesting, satisfying, and exciting careers in our increasingly technology-based society. The demand for engineers is growing. Mean annual salary for a mechanical engineer with a bachelor's degree is $68,806 (National Society of Professional Engineers). Entry level engineering positions pay better than many any other fields. Job security is also better than for most other career paths. (For more info, see Occupational Outlook for Mechanical Engineers.)

Almost everyone knows that the "scientific method" is about making and verifying hypotheses. The "engineering method" is the strategy for making the best change in an uncertain situation within the available resources. So the engineering method is about applied science and technology development. Engineering design is sometimes thought of as the interface between technology and humanity.

Engineering education will prepare you for a career of decision-making. Opportunities are available in both the practice-oriented and research-oriented branches of engineering, as well as in non-engineering career fields like medicine, law, finance, and business. Opportunities are especially strong for women and minorities.

If you like mathematics and science, and want to develop a skill base to provide good control of your working life, consider the opportunities in engineering. You may also explore the pre-college site of the American Society for Engineering Education.
